Caring for Solid Wood Furniture in Mountain Winters

Quick answer: Keep indoor humidity around 35–45% with a humidifier, keep furniture a few feet from wood stoves, fireplaces and vents, stop snow and salt at the door, dust with a dry cloth and wax once or twice a year. Small seasonal gaps and snug drawers are normal and usually settle in spring.

Dry heat and wood

High-elevation winters are cold, and furnaces and wood stoves run for months. That heating dries indoor air, sometimes below 20 percent humidity. Solid wood responds by releasing moisture and shrinking slightly. Well-built furniture is designed for this, but extreme dryness over a long time can open small gaps or loosen joints.

A simple hygrometer tells you what's happening; aim for 35 to 45 percent in winter.

Respect the wood stove

Radiant heat dries one side of a piece faster than the other. Keep solid wood at least 3 feet from wood stoves and fireplaces, and a couple of feet from vents and baseboard heaters. If a coffee table must sit near the hearth, rotate it a few times over the winter.

A pan of water on a wood stove adds a little moisture to the air, too.

Stop snow and salt at the door

Melting snow and road salt are hard on finishes. Place a sturdy mat outside and inside the door, and a rustic live edge bench where people can sit to pull off boots. Wipe up puddles quickly, especially near wood furniture legs.

A boot tray under the bench catches meltwater before it reaches the floor.

Everyday cleaning

Dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. For sticky spots, use a cloth barely dampened with water and a drop of mild soap, then dry right away. Avoid silicone sprays and all-purpose cleaners, which leave residue and dull the finish over time.

Coasters and trivets prevent white rings from hot mugs and wet glasses.

Wax and oil

Late fall is a great time to give tabletops and vanity cases a thin coat of paste wax or furniture oil. Apply sparingly, wait as directed and buff to a soft sheen. Bookshelves and wall pieces need only occasional dusting and a light wax once a year.

Test any new product on a hidden spot first.

Vanities in winter

Bathrooms swing between dry winter air and steamy showers. Run the fan to clear steam, then let the room air out. Wipe water off a wood vanity top after each use. The combination of good ventilation and quick cleanup keeps the finish happy year-round.

Drawers may feel slightly different from season to season — that's normal.

What seasonal movement means

A hairline gap between boards in January or a drawer that sticks in July is the wood responding to the air, not a defect. It usually closes or eases as humidity changes. Don't force, glue or plane seasonal gaps.

Cabins that sit empty

Many mountain homes are weekend or seasonal places. If yours sits closed for weeks in winter, set the thermostat to a steady, moderate temperature rather than letting the house freeze and thaw repeatedly. Pull furniture slightly away from exterior walls, and leave interior doors open so air moves through the rooms.

Covering pieces with breathable cotton sheets keeps dust off without trapping moisture.

A simple seasonal routine

In fall, wax tabletops and vanity cases and move pieces away from the stove and vents. In winter, watch humidity and wipe up snowmelt quickly. In spring, dust thoroughly and check hardware for anything that loosened over the dry months. In summer, keep pieces out of strong afternoon sun.

A few minutes each season is all solid wood needs to look good for many years.
